Former Rep Member Mike Ugwu Buried as Dignitaries Gather in Enugu

Late Hon. Chief Mike Okonkwo Ugwu, popularly known as Ikedimkpa of Affa and a former member of the Federal House of Representatives who represented Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency during Nigeria’s Second Republic, has been laid to rest in his hometown of Amokwu, Affa, in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The burial ceremony attracted a large turnout of political leaders, government officials, community stakeholders, family members, friends, and well-wishers who gathered to pay their final respects to the late elder statesman. Among those in attendance were the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu, who represented the State Governor, the Chairman of Udi Local Government Area, Hon. Engr. Hyginus Agu, APC Chairman in Udi LGA, Hon. Barr. Bona Madu, Hon Chief Oguerinwa Amadi, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji.

The late Mike Ugwu served in the House of Representatives from 1979 to 1983 and was remembered for his contributions to national development, particularly during his tenure as Chairman of the House Committee on Telecommunications, where he played a key role in efforts aimed at improving Nigeria’s communication sector.

Speaking during the funeral, dignitaries described the deceased as a man of integrity, wisdom, and service whose influence extended beyond politics into community development and family life. Representing the state government, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu urged the family to take solace in the remarkable legacy left behind by the late politician.

“We are gathered not only to mourn his passing but to celebrate a life that touched many people. His contributions, values, and commitment to service will continue to be remembered,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the son of the deceased, Mike Ugwu Jr., CEO of FreeMe Digitals and Sony Music Africa, paid an emotional tribute to his father, describing him as a man whose impact would continue to inspire generations.

“My father gave his people a voice, gave his children the tools to succeed, and left behind a name that still carries weight. We will honour him with dignity and continue the values of responsibility, service, and unity that he stood for,” he said.

He further noted that the family would remain committed to preserving their father’s legacy and strengthening the bonds he built within the Affa community and beyond.

The colourful ceremony featured a funeral mass, tributes, cultural displays, and a reception attended by guests from different parts of the country, bringing to a close the final rites of one of Udi’s most respected political figures.

Late Chief Mike Okonkwo Ugwu is survived by children, grandchildren, relatives, and numerous associates who continue to celebrate a life marked by public service, leadership, and dedication to community development.
