Nigeria Dominates the Global Stage at Huawei ICT Competition Finals
Nigerian students have delivered a historic performance at the 10th Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals, sweeping top honors and shattering records in one of the world’s largest showcases of emerging tech talent.
The Global Finals, which held in Shenzhen, China, from June 2 – 5, 2026, with the theme “Connection, Glory, Future,” had more than 201,000 students from over 100 countries and regions participate in this year’s competition, including more than 6,000 from Nigeria.
After advancing through rigorous national and regional rounds, five exceptional Nigerian teams—comprising 15 students from Ahmadu Bello University, University of Port Harcourt, University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology Minna, Igbinedion University, and Nasarawa State University—traveled to Shenzhen to compete across four tracks: Network, Cloud, Computing, and Innovation.
The result was a historic sweep as Nigeria won two Grand Prizes in the Innovation Track and Network Track, two First Prizes for both of its Cloud Track teams, and one Second Prize in the Computing Track.
In a deeply proud and symbolic moment, Ambassador Mairo Musa Abbas, the Consul-General of Nigeria in Guangzhou, personally took the stage to present the coveted Grand Prizes to the triumphant Nigerian teams. Having such a high-ranking diplomatic official hand over the ultimate trophy added an extra layer of celebration, highlighting that this historic victory is not just a win for the universities, but a monumental milestone for the entire nation.
Nigeria further etched its name ever in the competition’s history by being the first and only country to produce two all-female teams that both won Grand Prizes.
A pivotal moment during the competition was the Innovation Team’s Grand Prize win with “Paravision”, an AI-driven healthcare solution built on Huawei’s cutting-edge tools. Designed to improve diagnosis and care for malaria and intestinal parasites, Paravision impressed judges with both its technical depth and real-world impact.
This victory sends a clear signal that Nigerian students, especially young women in technology, are not just end-users of technology, they are creating solutions, driving innovation, and shaping the digital future. With the right industry-academic partnerships, hands-on ICT training can unlock world-class innovation, and in the AI era, Nigeria’s talent pipeline is ready to lead.
The Huawei ICT Competition is an annual global event designed for students and teachers from colleges and universities, offering an international platform for competition and exchange. Since its launch in 2015, the competition has gained significant momentum, with more countries and participants joining each year.
In China, it has been listed as a national competition for university students, while globally, it has been recognized as a key partner flagship program by UNESCO’s Global Skills Academy.
