Egbetokun Introduced Key Reforms, Strengthened Police Discipline — Oshiomhole

Former Governor of Edo State and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has commended the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for what he described as a reform-driven and disciplined leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

Oshiomhole, who currently chairs the Senate Committee on Interior, made the remarks in a retirement tribute addressed to Egbetokun following his official disengagement from service on March 11, 2026.

In the letter, the lawmaker lauded Egbetokun’s decades of meritorious service, noting that his career was marked by professionalism, courage, humility, and integrity.

“Throughout your career, you exemplified the highest standards of professionalism, demonstrating a rare combination of courage, discipline, humility, and integrity in the discharge of your dutles,” he said.

He recalled his personal experience with the former police chief during his tenure as governor of Edo State, when Egbetokun served as Squadron Commander of Mobile Police Force 5 in Benin City.

According to him, despite the prevailing political climate at the time, Egbetokun maintained civility and demonstrated non-partisanship in ensuring a secure electoral process.

“I had the privilege of experiencing this firsthand when I served as Governor of Edo State and you were Squadron Commander of Mobile Police Force 5 in Benin City. Despite the political dimate at the time, you showed commendable civility and non-partisanship in ensuring a secure electoral environment.”

Oshiomhole also highlighted Egbetokun’s commitment to the welfare of police personnel, citing an instance where the former IGP personally conducted him round the Mobile Police Barracks to provide firsthand insight into the living conditions of officers.

The senator particularly praised Egbetokun’s tenure as Inspector-General, stating that it introduced key reforms and strengthened internal discipline within the Force.

“Indeed, you have written your name in gold in the history of our nation’s policing system,” Oshiomhole said.

He wished the retired police chief good health and fulfillment in retirement, expressing confidence that his legacy would continue to inspire officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
