SALT Foundation Hosts Inter-School Debate Competition in Abuja

The Anna Odukoya Save A Life Today (S.A.L.T) Foundation has successfully hosted a debate competition in collaboration with the secondary Education Board involving 10 government secondary schools in Abuja, as part of efforts to promote critical thinking, public speaking, research skills and civic engagement among young Nigerians.

The competition, which drew participants from Government Secondary School (GSS) Kubwa, Army Day Secondary School (ADSS) Asokoro, Model Secondary School (MSS) Maitama, GSS Jibi, GSS Garki, GSS Lifecamp, GSS Dutse, GSS Mpape, GSS Mabushi and GSS Wuse Zone 3, showcased impressive intellectual depth and confidence among the students.

Speaking at the event, the founder of the foundation, Anna Odukoya, said the initiative was designed to go beyond classroom learning. “We are committed to nurturing young minds who can think critically, speak confidently and contribute meaningfully to society. This debate competition is about empowering students to engage with real-world issues and discover their leadership potential,” she stated.

Participants debated a range of topical issues, including whether continuous assessment should replace examinations, if video games should be considered a sport, the ban on genetically modified foods, financial aid to underdeveloped nations, climate change as the greatest threat to mankind, voting rights for 16-year-olds, and the impact of technology on students’ learning habits.

The students presented well-researched arguments, demonstrating strong skills in argumentation, rebuttal, teamwork and leadership, while engaging with issues affecting Nigeria and the global community.

Beyond the debates, the competition also offered mentorship opportunities, with selected students receiving scholarships in recognition of their outstanding performances. Winners were presented with prizes, while all participants received certificates of participation.

As part of the enrichment programme, students were gifted copies of Nwaekeamadi, a book that explores the adventures of a young Igbo woman in southeastern Nigeria. Some participants also received The Fintech Leaders Playbook by Dipo Fisho, which highlights the journeys and insights of global and African fintech pioneers.

The initiative by S.A.L.T Foundation aligns with broader efforts to strengthen education and youth development in Nigeria, underscoring the role of extracurricular activities in shaping students’ academic and personal growth.

Organisers disclosed that the date for the inter-school debate finals will be communicated in due course.
