Peter Uzoho
Nigeria’s wobbly electricity grid Friday suffered another breakdown but first time in 2026, throwing many parts of the country in darkness and disrupting electricity supply to millions of households and businesses.
Power generation dropped sharply from over 4,500 megawatts to as low as 24mw as of 1:30pm.
All 23 power generation plants connected to the grid lost output during the incident, resulting in zero power allocation to each of the 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos).
No cause of the collapse has been determined as the National Independent System Operator (NISO) had yet to issue a a statement as of the time of filing this report.
On December 29, 2025, the national electricity grid recorded a collapse, leaving power supply across most of the country at near zero levels, plunging homes and businesses into blackout.
