Benny Zanda, the Medical Student Redefining Nigeria’s Emerging Music Scene
The Nigerian creative and academic landscape is witnessing the rise of a unique talent: Oamen Samuel Osehoje, popularly known in music circles as Benny Zanda. A final-year medical student at Babcock University, Benny Zanda is breaking stereotypes by blending the rigor of medical studies with the passion and artistry of music.
Benny’s musical journey began at the tender age of eight in the church choirs of Bayelsa State, inspired by a family deeply rooted in creativity. His mother, Victoria Oamen, a school founder, and his uncle, Sammy, were songwriters who infused young Benny with a love for music alongside a strong sense of responsibility and education. “I drew inspiration from fellow medical students who were artists while pursuing their degrees. I noticed how songs resonated more than research papers ever could,” he recalls.
While his academic path has been demanding, Benny Zanda has steadily made a name for himself in the creative space. His stage name combines Benson, his middle name, and Panda, a nod to his favorite high school song from ASTEC, Owerrinta, Abia State. Since formally launching his recording career in 2024, he has released two singles, Moneycetamol and Bread, which showcased his versatility and ability to connect with audiences across Nigeria and Beyond. In 3 quarters of 2025 alone, his 2 songs amassed over 190,000 streams and counting across all streaming platforms, crossing 50 countries.
Benny has not only entertained but also fostered collaboration among upcoming talents. One notable partnership is with Draco, the dancing doctor, a fellow final-year medical student and budding choreographer who is very good at what he does.
In addition to performing at student-focused events and other creative projects, Benny’s impact stretches beyond music. He has become a source of inspiration for aspiring artists navigating the challenging balance between education and passion.
Looking ahead, Benny Zanda is preparing to release his highly anticipated third single, Olamide, a project that has been in the works since 2024. “The first two songs were simple experiments,” he explains. “With Olamide and future albums, I plan to expand my creative footprint and reach a larger audience.”
Despite the demanding pace of medical school, Benny’s achievements reflect resilience and dedication. Nearing completion of his medical degree this year, he acknowledges the importance of a supportive network and the sense of fulfillment that comes with pursuing both his professional and creative ambitions.
As Nigeria continues to embrace artists who defy conventional paths, Benny Zanda exemplifies how talent, discipline, and passion can co-exist—making him a rising star to watch in both the medical and music communities and he’s grateful to everyone who’s made it possible.
