New Initiative Champions Inclusive Support, Empowerment for Visually Impaired People

A non-profit organisation, Family and Friends for the Visually Impaired Initiative (FAFVIPI), has officially launched in Nigeria to transform the lives of visually impaired individuals and their families through targeted support, education, and advocacy.

Founded by Mrs. Ijeoma Onoja in heartfelt memory of her late blind son, Nelson Chibuikem Onoja, FAFVIPI is committed to building a compassionate and inclusive community where visually impaired persons, particularly those of school age, are equipped with the tools needed to succeed.

The organisation’s core mission is to empower visually impaired individuals particularly those of school age and their families through three key pillars: advocacy, education, and inclusive support programs.
FAFVIPI will focus its activities on school-age individuals, ensuring they receive the necessary resources and opportunities for seamless academic and social integration. The goal is to shift the narrative from dependence to independence and full societal integration.

Speaking on the launch, Onoja highlighted the personal drive behind the initiative and its ultimate goal.

“FAFVIPI is resolutely committed to supporting visually impaired persons within the critical school age bracket,” Onoja stated. “Our activities must promote equal opportunities, independence, and social integration for persons with visual impairment, while simultaneously creating a compassionate community where everyone is valued, understood, and given the tools they need to thrive.”

The launch marks a significant step toward creating a more accessible and equitable educational and social landscape for the visually impaired community in Nigeria.
