Arc.Obi: Review of Architectural Design Works by Arc. Abiodun Olaniran to Illustrate Importance of Sustainable Building Construction
Sustainable architectural design of buildings in the equatorial region of the world typically takes into account the beauty of simple horizontal architectural elements to promote thermal comfort, features such as large windows for cross ventilation, and the conservative use of building materials. Arc Abiodun Olaniran has shown a high level of professional expertise in his architectural design works. His design style illustrates a beautiful combination of warm colours and beautiful architectural designs that promote structural integrity and elegant architectural character.
As an architect working for about two decades, he has demonstrated a strong passion for excellence, functionality and sustainability in his architectural design works. His design of institutional and public-sector buildings shows a deep understanding of the interplay between architectural design and building construction to protect occupants from direct sunlight, facilitate green architecture, enhance cost-effectiveness and ensure elegant beauty from every angle of the building.
His interest in simple but elegant building elements gives his architectural style a distinct international quality. He combines the functionality of comfortable spaces with the sustainability of building services and the structural integrity of the well-proportioned columns and beams.
His designs adhere to the principles of sustainable design by ensuring that the building materials used are not wasted, and they inspire delight in every person who sees his architectural designs.
In his institutional buildings, he focuses on designing building infrastructure that enhances the process of educating students, learning in conducive spaces and conducting academic research in a suitable building environment. Some of his major works include are the Research Laboratory Complex at the University of Uyo, the Engineering Faculty Building, Central Research Laboratory, Simulation Centre, and Senate Building renovation at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH); and the Agricultural Engineering Building and Implementation Workshop at the University of Ibadan.
He incorporated flexibility in his design so that some of the partition walls can be moved to expand the research areas. He took into consideration the fact that we live in a digital world, and so knowledge is always dynamic.
His knowledge of building information modelling has helped him to ensure excellent design of spaces for educational and healthcare facilities, where he emphasised the importance of daylight optimisation, passive cooling strategies, lifecycle cost analysis and the use of sustainable building materials. His civic projects in Lagos include various NOUN Study Centres, secondary schools and Gbaja Hospital in Surulere. He focused on spatial efficiency, considerations for infection control, technical precision, and regulatory health standards to achieve excellence in architectural design and building infrastructure.
Arc. Abiodun Olaniran’s architectural design works enhance sustainable building construction through his drive to synergize architectural design, engineering principles and sustainability frameworks. He is keen on making a positive impact on society with buildings that inspire environmental responsibility and a high level of productivity at work. He is a distinguished professional registered with the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria, and he is an active member of the Nigerian Institute of Architects.
His architectural design works remind all stakeholders in the society that public buildings should be functional, beautiful, sustainable and have a high level of structural integrity. He promotes excellence in the building industry by collaborating with professionals in the built environment to ensure optimal efficiency and integrity in building design and construction.
