Dayo Sax in compelling performance of ‘Joromi’, ‘Onidodo Oni moin moin’

It was another charismatic performance by celebrated Nigerian gospel saxophonist, music instructor, and engineer, Samuel Ogundayo, popularly known as Dayo Sax, as he delivered a brilliant and impressive interpretation of two evergreen songs – ‘Joromi’ and ‘Onidodo Oni moin moin’.
With every show, Dayo Sax, known for bridging denominational divides through his STAMP (Success Through Abundant Music and Praise) initiative, brings showcases his mastery of the saxophone, as he effortlessly navigates intricate passages, showcasing his technical prowess and control over the instrument. With the saxophone, Dayo Sax is at home with his art – the saxophone, which has an undeniable allure that captivates audiences. He possesses a distinct, unmistakable sound and style that distinguishes him from his peers. His has been hailed for his creativity, spontaneous improvisation skills in conveying the full spectrum of human emotions through his music. His notes resonate in a way that absorb listeners, evoking deep feelings and connecting on a profound level.
This is what he brings to the fore in his saxophone rendition of two evergreen songs – ‘Joromi’, a 1965 Highlife song by Sir Victor Uwaifo, and ‘Onidodo Oni moin moin’, a classic Nigerian Highlife song famously released by Fela Kuti (Fela Ransome-Kuti) in 1967 on the album Koola Lobitos Vol. III.
Backed by other members of the band, Dayo Sax opens the performance with Sir Victor Uwaifo’s Highlife hit song, “Joromi”, which is based on a Benin folktale about a hero named Joromi who was so powerful he sought to challenge spirits in the afterlife. Thus, he takes the audience on a brilliant musical-folkloric cultural expression.
Following it seamlessly is his performance of “Onidodo Oni moin moin”, a classic Nigerian Highlife song famously released by Fela Kuti (Fela Ransome-Kuti) in 1967 on the album Koola Lobitos Vol. III. It is a Yoruba folk song often performed with a groovy, satirical tone, highlighting the experiences of street vendors.
With this performance, which was not just a testament to his artistry, but also a celebration of the power of music to uplift the human spirit, Dayo Sax has once again proven why he is regarded, not only as one of leading voices in the gospel music, but also one of the leading saxophonists. His performances and skill transcend the typical boundaries of contemporary gospel music.
He adapts his technique and performance to match the mood and genre of the music he is playing, showcasing acute musical perception and lyrical sensitivity.
Based in Lagos, Dayo Sax has over 15 years of experience, specializing in worship leading and saxophone training. He performed at the 2024 Bradford African Festival.
He has a background in Electrical Engineering (LAUTECH) and Information Technology (UNILAG/University of Bradford).
His musical journey started in his church choir (CAC) playing drums, before transitioning to the saxophone in 2012, with training from MUSON and mentorship from artists like Olujazz.
He founded STAMP in 2018, which focuses on music ministry, worship, and bringing together different Christian denominations.
Also a respected music tutor in Lagos, offering lessons on saxophone techniques, tone, and application, Dayo Sax is noted for his smooth, engaging style, often performing at gospel, corporate, and social events.
