Davnotch Tennis Championships Serves off in Abuja
Amidst the complex but exquisite skills of fore-hand, back hand, top spins, mid court rallies, baseline expertise, scintillating aces et al, the annual Davnotch Open Tennis Championships, the fifth in the series, served off on Monday, July 13 through July 19, 2025 at the tennis courts of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja.
Top-ranked Nigerian tennis players within the local scene as well as those from the diaspora are expected to grace this edition with professional aplomb.
President, Nigeria Tennis Federation, Dayo Akindoju, said that the “Davnoth Tournament is helping immensely in the drive to give budding stars global visibility and also placing Nigeria on the world sports map”.
For example, Ikenna Okonkwo, who was discovered at the third edition of Davnotch Tournament is currently featuring in the ITF J-100 tournament in Mexico enroute Tunisia for further exposure.
Also, there will be a remarkable novelty where the junior cadre players will compete to gain relevance and climb the competitive ladder to global exposure.
Aside this tennis tourney, Davnotch Open Championship is one in the plethora of sports sponsorships that Rt. Hon Victor Ochei, speaker emeritus of the Delta State House of Assembly had embarked upon in using sports as a veritable tool for developing humanity. He had previously, sponsored the Delta Force football club.
At some point, Hon. Ochei bankrolled the programme and activities of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation as its patron and sponsor for three consecutive editions of the National Wheelchair Basketball Championship.
The Annual Onicha-Olona Soccer Unity Cup Competition running for over six years is also one of the sports events bankrolled by Hon. Ochei. This particular tournament has attracted soccer aficionados like Austin Jay-Jay Okocha amongst others.
Hon Ochei caps his love for sports by building the Donald Ochei Mini- stadium in his home town of Onicha-Olona, Aniocha North LGA of Delta State. It is arguably the first of its kind in that part of the country.
