2027: Jibrin Barau Rejects VP Campaign, Urges Full Support for Tinubu’s Leadership
Sunday Aborisade in Abuja
Deputy Senate President and First Deputy Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Barau Jibrin, has distanced himself from calls by a northern youth group pushing for his emergence as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 elections.
Jibrin spoke, in a press release by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, in Abuja, yesterday.
Reacting to statements and social media campaigns initiated by Northern Nigeria Progressive Youth Assembly (NNPYA), Jibrin described the move as “misplaced” and “premature”.
He urged the group and similar advocates to, instead, focus on supporting President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He said in the statement, “My attention has been drawn to various posts on social media and in some national dailies by groups, including the NNPYA, urging our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to pick me as his running mate come 2027.
“This is out of place at this moment and not in our best interest.”
Jibrin appealed to the youth group and others involved in the campaign to halt their advocacy, emphasising that the priority now should be national development under the Tinubu leadership.
He stated, “If you are truly my supporters, please, desist from this unnecessary clamour and join the train to restore the glorious days of our country under the able leadership of President Tinubu.”
Reaffirming his loyalty and commitment to the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” Barau called on all Nigerians to set aside political ambitions and rally behind the president’s efforts to address the country’s pressing challenges.
According to him, “This is not the time to engage in political permutations. What should be paramount to all of us is the success of the president. He is genuinely committed to turning around our country’s fortunes positively.
“Therefore, I appeal to all to support him fully.”
