The National Youth Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN) has called on state governors and National Assembly members to uphold democratic principles and ensure that their laws and policies serve the people directly.

Speaking at a press conference, National Speaker of the Youth Assembly, Ambassador Usman Bashir Shagari, emphasised the importance of democratic principles in governance, stating that “democracy revolves around the people.”

“As a youth-led organisation dedicated to advancing Sustainable Development Goals through partnerships with NGOs, CSOs, and other organisations, NYAN recognises democracy as the cornerstone of governance that empowers the people.”

Shagari highlighted the importance of public hearings in ensuring citizens’ voices are heard and reflected in decision-making.

He urged state governors to uphold democracy by crafting policies that directly serve the people.

According to him, Nigeria’s democratic journey over the past quarter century has been marked by notable achievements.

Economic stabilisation efforts, including initiatives to boost industrialisation and promote the agricultural sector, have yielded positive outcomes, driving economic growth, creating employment opportunities, and improving livelihoods for countless Nigerians.

“Over the past 26 years, Nigerian democracy has achieved significant milestones, including, consolidation of democratic institutions, expansion of political participation and improvement of human rights and rule of law.”

However, despite these achievements, challenges persist, including socio-economic disparities and other imperatives that hinder inclusive growth and the well-being of Nigerians.

Shagari urged governors to craft policies that directly serve the people and called on National Assembly members to involve citizens in important bills and matters.

The Youth Assembly also proposed several solutions to address Nigeria’s challenges, including economic stabilisation, enhanced security, promoting unity and diversity, and strengthening political institutions.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria and called on young people, government institutions, civil society organisations, and the private sector to unite in a collective effort to pursue a more prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable Nigeria.
