RBM Autism Center in Abuja Provides Specialized Care for Children on the Spectrum, Says Founder

In a major boost to Nigeria’s special needs healthcare landscape, the Riabymaria Foundation (RBMF) has unveiled the RBM Autism Center in Abuja, a facility dedicated to providing round-the-clock, holistic care for individuals on the autism spectrum.

The founder, Maria Chikodili Okafor, disclosed during the official launch that the initiative was born from a deeply personal experience involving her late cousin, who, she revealed, passed away before receiving an autism diagnosis. This life-altering event spurred a mission to bridge the glaring gap in autism care within Nigeria.

“The Riabymaria Foundation was born from a personal journey of love, loss, and a commitment to change,” Maria said. “We noticed children on the spectrum were not receiving the proper care they deserved and were not getting the appropriate therapy tailored to their individual needs.”

The RBM Autism Center promises a wide range of support services, including speech, occupational, behavioural, and sensory integration therapies. The centre also offers extracurriculars such as arts and crafts, music therapy, and sports, as well as customized diet plans, education, and life skills training to promote independence and social inclusion.

In addition to clinical care, RBMF extends its focus to family empowerment. Through counselling, training sessions, and sponsorship opportunities for families who cannot afford therapy, the foundation is positioning itself as a lifeline for those affected by autism.

Speaking further, Maria stressed the need to challenge stigma and break down barriers associated with autism in Nigerian society. “Addressing the unique challenges in Nigeria, particularly stigma and limited resources, is central to our strategy,” she said.

RBMF also engages in active community outreach, partnerships with schools, and collaborations with faith-based institutions to promote awareness and inclusivity. “Over the years, this strategy has produced impactful outcomes. We want children not just to adapt, but to thrive,” she added.

With its headquarters now open in the nation’s capital, the RBM Autism Center is a model of compassionate, inclusive, and professional care for children with autism across Nigeria.
