Path to Possibilities Hosts Vocational Training, Sex Education Workshops

Path to Possibilities, a charity organisation, has been dedicated to empowering underprivileged children and young people in Ikota for sixteen years.

Staying true to its mission and accelerating action one community at a time, Path to Possibilities recently hosted two impactful workshops at its resource centre in Ikota: a Vocational Training session for out-of-school children and a Sex Education and Teenage Pregnancy/Motherhood Workshop.

These initiatives are part of the charity’s ongoing efforts to create opportunities and foster sustainable change in Ikota.

Recognising the high number of out-of-school children in Ikota, the trustees of Path to Possibilities, led by its Founder Titiolami Bello and Director Funmi Akanmu, hosted a Vocational Training Workshop focused on shoemaking and dressmaking—the initiative aimed to provide vocational training to children without formal education.

With over 30 children present, a skilled local dressmaker and shoemaker led sessions where they shared their expertise to equip the children with hands-on training in the fundamentals of these crafts and encouraged them to explore apprenticeship opportunities.

Speaking about the workshop, Titiolami Bello emphasised the importance of vocational training for children who lack access to formal education.

“We know that people in this local area work with their hands. We have tailors and shoemakers, so we brought them in to share their skills with the hope that some of these children will take up apprenticeships if formal education is not available to them,” she said.

Furthermore, Path to Possibilities also organised a Sex Education and Teenage Pregnancy/Motherhood Workshop on the 20th of March.

This session aimed to address the gaps in sex education and the high rate of teenage pregnancies in Ikota.

A medical doctor and health advocate, Dr Mojisola Bisiriyu, led discussions on sexual health, personal boundaries, and responsible decision-making.

A key highlight was the affirmations recited by the girls and boys, reminding them of their self-worth and future potential.

The second workshop, focused on Teenage Pregnancy and Early Motherhood, provided much-needed guidance for teenage mothers.

Facilitated by Mrs. Oyedinran Omoyeni, a nurse midwife from a Lagos State Government hospital, she taught prenatal care, nutrition, and child-rearing.

This workshop catered to 20 pregnant teenagers and first-time mothers, equipping them with the essential knowledge to navigate early motherhood.

Reflecting on the workshops, Titiolami Bello stated: “We have identified a significant gap in sex education in the Ikota community. While the topic taught in civic education is usually in the context of rape. We want to broaden their understanding, teach them how to protect themselves and help prevent unwanted pregnancies. The high incidence of teenage pregnancies is something we need to address.”

To sustain these transformative initiatives, Path to Possibilities is seeking more monthly donors.

“We currently have 39 generous monthly donors supporting our work,” said Funmi Akanmu. “If our efforts resonate with you, please help us expand our donor base.
