FG Seals Strategic Partnership With Donor Agencies to Unlock Full Potential of Steel Sector

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Steel Development has taken a significant initiative to enhance collaboration with Development Partners and International Donor Agencies operating in Nigeria.

The strategic partnership it revealed aims to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s steel sector, driving economic diversification, job creation, and sustainable development.

The Government, through the Ministry of Steel Development, noted that by supporting the revitalisation of key steel assets and infrastructure, investing in capacity development, and championing regulatory and trade reforms, the partners would be contributing to a cause that is not only about industrial progress but national rejuvenation.

The Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shaiubu Abubakar Audu, speaking at a strategic meeting with Head of Donor Agencies, he said: “recognisng the crucial role that Development Partners and International Donor Agencies play in supporting key sectors, including infrastructure development, skills training, and technological advancements, the partnership seeks to leverage the expertise and resources of these agencies to bolster the development of a robust and competitive steel industry, ultimately contributing to the nation’s overall growth.

He hinted that their partnership can accelerate the modernisation of the Nigeria’s steel assets, build the required infrastructure, empower the country’s workforce with the skills of tomorrow, and fortify the regulatory frameworks that will underpin the nation’s industry’s growth.

According to him, “Together, we have the opportunity to create a legacy of sustainable development, job creation, and industrial innovation that will resonate across generations”.

He noted that the partnership is essential for bridging the gap between our ambitious vision and the practical realities of implementation.

“The partners commitment will help unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s steel sector, reduce the country’s reliance on imports, fostering local innovation, and position the nation as a beacon of industrial excellence in Africa and beyond.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chris Osa Isokpunwu, reiterated the Ministry’s need for prospective partners who will help address the daunting task facing the sector, noting that ultimately, the partnership will contribute to building a more prosperous and sustainable future for all Nigerians.

In her remarks, the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Leilani Bin-Juda welcomed the initiative by the Ministry for synergy.

She stated that Australia is committed to supporting Nigeria’s steel development agenda, as according to her, a strong steel sector is fundamental to achieving economic diversification and sustainable growth, adding that we look forward to working closely with the Ministry to achieve these shared goals.

Speaking, Resident Representative of United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, who was represented by Udumma Nwokike, Climate Change Programme Analyst, UNDP, disclosed that UNDP is open for collaboration and partnership as the areas the Ministry is seeking to collaborate, fully aligns with UNDP’s vision.

Also, Dr. Osuji Otu, from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization stated that UNIDO is committed to partner with the Ministry to promote investment for the steel sector.
