Lagos Deputy Governor, Hamzat Inspires LJLA Fellows on Data-Driven Leadership and Inclusive Governance

In a thought-provoking fireside chat at the Lagos House, Ikeja, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, engaged the second cohort of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) Fellows on the critical role of mindset in governance.

The session delved into data-driven leadership, national identity, and the responsibility of young leaders in shaping Nigeria’s future.

Drawing from his extensive experience in public service, Dr. Hamzat emphasized the need for resilience, accountability, and innovation in leadership.

He challenged the Fellows to think critically about governance issues and develop proactive strategies for meaningful change.

“A leader’s mindset is the foundation upon which decisions, strategies, and governance frameworks are built. Without the right mindset – one that embraces resilience, accountability, and innovation—leadership becomes reactive rather than proactive, limiting its ability to drive meaningful change,” Dr. Obafemi Hamzat explained.

Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of a collective mindset shift, urging fellows to embrace unity in tackling imminent issues.

He stressed that effective governance thrives on inclusivity and shared purpose, calling on the Fellows to champion these values in leadership.

Highlighting the role of data in governance, Dr. Hamzat urged the Fellows to embrace evidence-based decision-making.

“What you cannot measure, you cannot manage. We must build governance systems driven by data and facts, not emotions,” he said, reinforcing the need for informed leadership in tackling complex societal challenges.

The Executive Secretary of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, expressed her appreciation for Dr. Hamzat’s engagement with the Fellows.

“This session provided invaluable insights into the realities of leadership. I am confident that our Fellows will carry forward these lessons, applying them in their own journeys toward impactful governance.”

The Fireside Chat is a cornerstone of the LJLA Fellowship program, designed to offer emerging leaders the direct access to seasoned policymakers and experts.

Conducted under the Chatham House Rule, these sessions foster open dialogue, critical thinking, and problem-solving, equipping Fellows with the tools to navigate leadership complexities effectively.

Dr. Hamzat’s engagement underscores LJLA’s commitment to developing a new generation of visionary leaders who prioritize informed decision-making, inclusivity, and national responsibility.

Through immersive learning experiences like this, the Academy continues to empower young professionals to drive sustainable change and contribute to Nigeria’s development.
