Ofonagoro Kelechi Anthony Bags NITA’s Most Exceptional Oil & Gas Energy Technology Professional of the Year Award

There are professionals who simply work in an industry, and then there are those who quietly reshape it from within, and Ofonagoro Kelechi Anthony belongs unmistakably to the second category. In a recognition that has reverberated across Nigeria’s energy sector and beyond, the accomplished petroleum engineer and Managing Director have been honoured with the Most Exceptional Oil & Gas Energy Technology Professional of the Year Award by the Nigerian Innovation and Technology Awards (NITA), cementing his place among the most consequential figures in Africa’s upstream oil and gas landscape.

The award, presented at a prestigious ceremony that drew industry leaders, policymakers, and energy professionals from across the country, could not have found a more deserving recipient. With over 18 years of active, hands-on experience spanning deep offshore operations, shallow waters, swamp terrain, and land-based engagements, Ofonagoro Kelechi Anthony has spent nearly two decades demonstrating that excellence in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector is not merely possible but achievable at the highest global standard. From the creeks of the Niger Delta to the boardrooms of multinational energy giants, his trajectory is one of relentless upward motion, driven by intellect, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to operational precision.

A graduate of the Federal University of Technology Owerri in Mechanical Engineering, and a holder of a Master of Engineering degree in Petroleum with a major in Drilling and Well Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt, his academic foundation is as formidable as his field credentials. He has worked with some of the most respected names in global energy services, including Halliburton Energy Services, where he served across multiple senior roles for nearly a decade, and currently leads operations at Kelanth Energy Solutions Limited as Managing Director, overseeing complex well intervention, plug and abandon, and workover operations.

His competencies read like a masterclass in oil and gas operations: well hydraulics, supply chain management, production testing, well decommissioning, explosives safety, and integrated project management are among the disciplines he has not only mastered but taught to others. As a certified Local Explosives Safety Officer and IADC Well Control Certified professional, he has been the man organisations trust when operations demand both precision and safety without compromise. He has trained engineers, chaired offshore morning briefings, designed TCP tool strings, and managed the movement of personnel and equipment across multiple natural work areas, often simultaneously.

His published research adds yet another dimension to an already extraordinary profile. With over 17 peer-reviewed journal articles to his name, covering topics ranging from machine learning in predictive maintenance and AI applications in materials science, to sustainable decommissioning practices and pore pressure prediction in the Niger Delta, Ofonagoro Kelechi Anthony is not merely a practitioner but a scholar whose intellectual contributions are shaping the future of energy technology discourse globally.

Speaking exclusively after receiving the award, he was visibly moved. “This recognition means everything to me,” he said, his voice carrying the quiet confidence of a man who has earned every word. “I have given my life to this industry. Early mornings, long nights offshore, years away from family, not for accolades, but because I genuinely believe that Nigeria’s oil and gas sector deserves world-class professionals who can hold their own anywhere on the planet. To be recognised by NITA for that commitment is deeply humbling.” He paused, then added with characteristic resolve: “But I see this as a charge, not just a celebration. There are young engineers watching. This award tells them that if you commit to excellence and refuse to cut corners, this country will recognise you. That message matters more to me than the plaque.”

His active membership in the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) further underscores the breadth of his professional engagement as a man who does not merely occupy spaces but elevates them.

In an industry where Nigeria’s vast petroleum wealth has too often been managed below its potential, Ofonagoro Kelechi Anthony stands as proof that indigenous talent, properly nurtured and rigorously applied, can drive transformation at the highest levels. The NITA award is not just his achievement but a statement about what Nigeria’s energy future can look like when it is guided by the right hands.
