Foundation Trains 100 Teachers in Ibadan, Oyo State Through Project Revive Initiative
The Well Teachers Education Foundation has trained over a hundred general subjects and STEM teachers from Triumph Schools and Sankay College, in Ibadan, Oyo State, through its Project Revive Initiative, sponsored by Peace First.
The Foundation, whose mission is to reimagine and transform education by providing access, platforms, and training for stakeholders in the education sector, set out to Oyo State on the first phase of its implementation in August.
Thus, the project was designed to provide teachers with a holistic, comprehensive professional development program to improve their teaching practices and encourage innovation.
According to Programmes Managers Olabisi Idowu and Inioluwa Adeyinka, the project’s motivation was driven by a desire to see remarkable changes in students’ learning outcomes, a change that is unpredictable if stakeholders – teachers – are underprepared.
Principal of Triump Secondary School, Mrs. Adebisi O. O, stated in a statement that “Formal education should be inclusive and not solely focused on the learner. Increase the number of instructors, parents, and other stakeholders included in the programme to effectively engage with more learners and maximize their potential. We should not only assess students based on their academic performance but also take into account other factors that could either facilitate or hinder effective learning among students.”
“Teaching STEM can be interesting,” one of the STEM teachers said, “I gained knowledge on how to create instructional materials using AI.” The teacher also shared the challenges they encounter, highlighting the lack of time for STEM activities in the classroom, particularly the lessons they teach, and the need for classrooms to have digital capabilities.
Responding to one of our team members, one of the general subject teachers from the secondary school stated that the training helped them understand the value of delivering their STEM subjects through explanatory methods and how they can help learners have great academic experiences.
She mentioned that the training has bolstered her professional drive to set a positive example for her students consistently.
The founder of The Well Teachers Foundation, Erioluwa Adeyinka, said the foundation targeted teachers because “they are the direct-in-line contact with learners for more than half the active time of day.”
He further emphasized the importance of ensuring that everything a child learns is useful, stating that this can only happen if teachers teach in a way that learners want to learn and in safe spaces where learners can thrive.
He said, “By understanding the unique learning ability of every child under your care, adopting different learning methods, and creating a good learning and enabling environment, you can almost guarantee a desired learning outcome.
One highly participatory teacher in the science department at Triumph Secondary School said, “The training changed her motivation for teaching and improved her teaching skills, while also fostering a bond with other colleagues. “She went on to commend the Well Teachers Foundation for thinking so well to build teachers’ capacity to improve learning outcomes. I and my colleagues were hungry for this knowledge,” Sanusi R. O. says.
“The programme helped reinforce both my teaching and that of my colleagues,” he further stated. Another teacher, Oluwide, in his own words, said, “I learned the need to show love to all students, give them equal opportunities, and treat them according to their abilities.”
