Seasoned tech innovator, Victor Umozurike, has unveiled an innovative solution he founded to combat food waste and hunger in Nigeria, leveraging artificial intelligence and logistics to transform surplus food into a lifeline for those in need.

Disclosing this in a media statement recently, he underscored the potential of technology in addressing Nigeria’s pressing issues of food waste and hunger, highlighting its capacity in making a tangible impact on the lives of people.

According to Umozurike, “In Nigeria, where food scarcity exists side-by-side with excess, the disconnect between supply and need is staggering.”

He noted that thousands of tons of food go to waste annually due to inefficiencies in the supply chain, while millions go to bed hungry.

To solve this challenge, Umozurike founded an innovative solution, SecondTable.

SecondTable is a Nigerian tech platform that leverages artificial intelligence to reroute surplus food to where it’s needed most.

The platform has facilitated the redistribution of over 12,000 kilograms of food in under a year since launching in Lagos and Abuja.

“SecondTable isn’t just a food redistribution tool—it’s a public service infrastructure built on data, empathy, and social innovation,” he said. “With the right support, it could be one of the most important African-born tech tools in the fight against hunger.”

The platform’s algorithm matches surplus inventory from food donors with verified food banks, shelters, and community kitchens based on proximity, shelf life, and real-time demand.

This rapid-response mechanism ensures that food is distributed while still fresh, cutting down on spoilage and transport costs.

SecondTable has received recognition from local NGOs and municipal governments for helping reduce landfill waste and improving nutrition among vulnerable populations.

It has also been shortlisted for regional innovation grants aimed at climate-smart food systems.

Looking ahead, Umozurike affirmed that SecondTable plans to expand to other Nigerian cities and eventually across Africa, exploring integrations with mobile money systems and SMS alert features to ensure last-mile delivery even in low-connectivity areas.

One key feature of the platform is its robust analytics dashboard, which helps partners track donation trends, demand spikes, and route efficiencies.

This transparency allows donors to quantify their impact and gives food banks the data they need to plan smarter.

“We are committed to making a tangible impact on the lives of people,” he emphasized. “By harnessing the power of technology, we can create a more efficient and effective food distribution system that benefits those in need.”

The success of SecondTable demonstrates the potential for tech innovation to drive social change and improve lives.
