In the crowded world of design resources, few projects manage to stand out and stay relevant. On May 31, 2024, Basicons, the Nigerian-made open-source icon library that has steadily built a reputation among product designers and developers, launched version 3.0, and the reception has been anything but ordinary.
The update introduces a wave of improvements including more than 200 new icons, the arrival of fill variants, color customisation, better categorisation, and the ability to copy SVGs and code directly into projects. Pro users now get dedicated accounts and profiles, pointing to a future where Basicons becomes more than just a library but a design platform in its own right.

For many in the design and development community, these are not just incremental upgrades but workflow changers. The ability to customise and copy directly cuts out unnecessary steps, and the expanded library gives teams greater flexibility to match icons to their brand voice. It is no surprise that Basicons 3.0 has been buzzing in the design community, sparking conversations on social media and design forums as creatives share how they are already using the new features.
The excitement carried over to Product Hunt, where the launch racked up close to 500 upvotes on launch day.

In an ecosystem where dozens of design tools are launched each week, such a response speaks volumes about the trust and enthusiasm Basicons commands.
What makes the story even more remarkable is its origin. Basicons was created by Nigerian duo Precious Madubuike, a designer, and Solomon Omojola, a developer. The partnership brought together design sensibility and technical execution, resulting in a tool that speaks equally well to both worlds. From that collaboration has grown a platform now used by tens of thousands of professionals across the globe.
Precious, reflecting on the launch, was quick to highlight the team effort behind it:
“We are truly humbled by the response to Basicons 3.0. This would not have been possible without the amazing support of our key contributors. A huge thank you to Raymond Emamezi Okoro, Ijeoma Anyanwu, Femi Ajanaku for their dedication in helping us grow Basicons into what it is today.”

Basicons has always stood out because of its simplicity. With this new release, it feels like it is stepping into a bigger role, less of a side resource and more of a central tool in the modern design and development stack. As designers continue to juggle speed, consistency, and scale, libraries like Basicons become invaluable, not just as assets but as infrastructure.

The journey is not stopping here. The team has promised ongoing improvements, a continuously growing library, and more features to meet the evolving needs of designers and developers worldwide.
