FUTA graduate wins prestigious U.S scholarship

A graduate of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Kayode Okunola, has been awarded a highly competitive graduate scholarship to pursue a Master of Science degree in Mathematics at Georgia State University (GSU), Atlanta, United States, in recognition of his academic excellence, leadership record, and growing contributions to data analytics and statistical research.

The scholarship, awarded in 2024, followed a rigorous selection process that assessed applicants’ academic achievements, research potential, professional experience, leadership qualities, and capacity to contribute to their chosen fields.

For Okunola, the award marked the culmination of years of dedication to statistics, data analysis, and problem-solving, a journey that began at FUTA, where he earned a Bachelor of Technology degree in Statistics in 2021.

While at the university, he distinguished himself both academically and through student leadership. He was recognised with the Distinguished Student Leader of the Year Award in 2019 and later received the Outstanding Student Leadership Award in 2021, reflecting his active involvement in campus development and student representation.

Between 2021 and 2024, Okunola was involved in analysing large datasets, developing predictive models, and designing data collection systems that improved operational efficiency and supported business decision-making.

His work in the private sector strengthened his practical understanding of how data can be used to solve real-world challenges.

According to records reviewed by this newspaper, some of his analytical projects contributed to improved business performance and enhanced forecasting accuracy through the application of advanced statistical and machine learning techniques.

Okunola’s commitment to professional development was further demonstrated through advanced certifications in data analytics, machine learning, statistical programming, and data visualisation.

Speaking on the scholarship award, Okunola described it as a validation of years of hard work and continuous learning.

“Receiving this scholarship was both an honour and a motivation to continue pursuing excellence in research, analytics and education. It reinforced my belief that dedication, discipline and a commitment to learning can create opportunities beyond geographical boundaries,” he said.

For many academics familiar with his journey, the achievement came as little surprise.

According to professor Akomolafe Abayomi, who taught Okunola during his undergraduate years at FUTA, he consistently demonstrated intellectual curiosity and a willingness to go beyond classroom requirements.

“Kayode was one of those students who showed a strong passion for statistics and data analysis early on. He combined academic excellence with leadership and was always eager to apply what he learned to practical problems,” the lecturer said.

Similarly, another faculty member, Dr. Joseph Kupolusi described him as a dedicated learner whose determination and work ethic set him apart from many of his peers.

“His success reflects not only his personal commitment but also the quality of training available within the Department of Statistics and FUTA as a whole. We are proud to see him competing successfully on the global stage,” the lecturer added.

The scholarship award highlights the growing recognition of Nigerian talents in science, technology, and data-driven disciplines. It also underscores the role of institutions such as FUTA in producing graduates capable of excelling in highly competitive international academic environments.
