The ProActive Northern Initiative (PANI) has expressed concerns about the federal government’s decision to suspend the N-Power program, a part of the Social Investment Program.
The convener of PANI, Comrade Isa Aliyu Musa, stated in a press conference that they are calling for a reconsideration of this decision and an expansion of the N-Power program to provide more opportunities for the youth and contribute to the region’s progress.
PANI also raised the issue of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, and others involved in advising the government on the suspension. They emphasized that they do not support the vilification of northern leaders and find such actions unacceptable.
PANI is particularly concerned about the impact of the N-Power program’s suspension, as it has been instrumental in providing employment and skills development opportunities, especially in the northern region. They highlighted the achievements of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management under Sadiya Umar Farouq, which includes various social intervention programs.
The group believes that the suspension of the N-Power program could have adverse effects on the livelihoods of many young Nigerians, who rely on it for their sustenance and skill development. They also pointed out the potential security implications in Northern Nigeria, where the program was helping to address economic and social factors contributing to insecurity.
PANI called for the government to focus on expanding the N-Power program instead of suspending it, as this would provide more opportunities for youth, contribute to economic growth, and reduce vulnerability to extremist ideologies. They emphasized the need for stakeholders to work together to improve the lives of people in Northern Nigeria.
The group’s concerns revolve around the timing of the suspension, considering the economic challenges and insecurity in the region. They believe that expanding the N-Power program could help address these issues and provide hope and optimism to the youth.
