Glory After Death: Ojomusic and Mohbad’s Collaboration Found New Life After His Passing
By chinonso ihekire
Since the breaking of Mohbad’s passing on his instagram page by his management, the whole of Lagos seemed to pause. It was a heavy moment. From Ikorodu to Surulere, fans were lighting candles, sharing memories online, and blasting his songs on repeat. On social media, tributes kept pouring in from fans in diaspora like UK, Canada, USA etc. The street was mourning, but the music was speaking louder than it has ever been. The recently dropped EP started topping charts.
In the middle of this wave, one song started making its way back into conversations, this is “Unruly,” a collaboration between Mohbad and producer-singer Ojomusic. It wasn’t a new song; it dropped in 2022. But after Mohbad’s death, it found new meaning. The emotions in the lyrics, the mood of the beat, and the story in the lyrics suddenly hit deeper.
During one of the online tribute sessions that gathered over five million viewers on TikTok, Ojomusic performed “Unruly” live and played guitar with it live. It was honestly raw and heartfelt. His voice sounds cracked a bit in parts, but that was the emotional moment that gets people talking. You could feel both grief and pride in his delivery. The performance was a reminder of how music can turn pain into memory.
Ojomusic, who produced and co-wrote the track, built the sound on soft piano keys and subtle bass lines. It’s not one of those loud club beats, instead it’s calm and steady, letting the emotion lead. Mohbad’s verses carry that street pain we all know him for, but with Ojomusic’s production, the whole thing feels almost spiritual. When you listen closely, it’s more than just a street anthem. That track makes you stop for a second and rethink like you’ve heard that same pain before somewhere, It sounds about struggle, faith, and trying to be strong when life is always testing you.
There’s a line Ojomusic sang that people now quote often: “We just dey unruly ‘cause we no know how long we go dey here.” When the song first dropped, most listeners just vibed to it. But after Mohbad’s death, that line took on a whole new meaning. It felt like a prophecy, or maybe just an honest truth about life and how short it can be.
The original version of “Unruly” has Mohbad taking the two main verses, while Ojomusic was just on the hook. During the tribute performance, though, Ojomusic added a new verse, it sounds like something personal that wasn’t in the 2022 release. That part touched a lot of fans. You could tell it came straight from his heart.
Looking back, it feels like Ojomusic should have had that verse in the original version too. It would have given the song a fuller picture of what “Unruly” really meant, it should not just be from Mohbad’s point of view but from Ojomusic’s, who clearly shared that same struggle from the slum. The added verse during the live performance showed how much depth he can bring when he steps out from behind the boards. If it had been there from day one, the record might have connected even more deeply. Still, that late verse turned out to be the part that made people listen again, so maybe it arrived right on time.
What’s interesting about Ojomusic is how much he does behind the scenes. He’s known for producing, mixing, and writing songs for others, names like Bela shmurda, Fola, Rybeena, and Dablixx Osha. But “Unruly” shows he can hold his own on the mic too. His vocals carried emotion, and his production framed Mohbad’s story perfectly.Ojomusic’s production skillfully redefined Mohbad’s story, and his vocals were full with emotion.
Listening to the track again, it’s clear that this is one of those songs that will age well and be here for a longtime. It sits somewhere between Afrobeats and hip-hop and it gives the vibe of the Lagos street but it’s also soulful, relatable and deep. It’s the kind of sound that could define the next wave of African music if more upcoming and blown artists keep exploring that lane.
Sadly, we won’t get more collaborations between Mohbad and Ojomusic. But “Unruly” stands as a reminder of what they created together, I describe it as a song that connects emotion, street life, and artistry. It’s a record that says a lot without trying too hard.
Rest easy, Mohbad.
And for Ojomusic, this is just the beginning. The industry is watching, and the streets are still listening.
