Digitalizing Identity Verification in West Africa: The Role of MetaMap

Introduction

Identity verification and background checks in African markets can be complicated puzzles. The largest problem has to do with data, specifically regarding how it is accessed, kept, and controlled. Since most organisations in this region are slow or having difficulty transitioning from paper archives or disjointed systems to digitilised data, this makes fast and accurate verification difficult. When it comes to identity verification, accuracy is of the utmost importance, since a single misspelling or inconsistent entry can raise questions about a person’s identification. The likelihood of errors is increased by manual data entry which makes this data format unreliable.

Another challenge is government regulations. Laws about data usage, privacy, and employment eligibility differ by nation. Businesses that operate internationally may face more difficulties because what is allowed in one country may be unlawful in another. Building an organised, effective verification system is therefore made more difficult by the lack of a single, comprehensive system for exchanging important records, whether they are criminal, tax, or health-related.

Nonetheless, a world exists without long queues, mountains of paperwork, or complex delays where verifying your identity should be as simple as clicking on your phone screen. This world is made possible through MataMap’s verification platform. MetaMap, with its bold determination to transform digital identity verification, is removing limitations that have prevented millions of Africans from accessing financial services, internet platforms, and important digital tools. By simplifying identity verification from a rigid procedure to a flexible, data-driven experience, MetaMap allows businesses to confidently rely on processed data, onboard more easily, and expand even further.

Fortunately, I was instrumental in setting up Metamap’s digital identification verification system for Africa with focus on major drivers in Nigeria and Kenya. With my expertise in business development and product planning, I assisted MetaMap in expanding its reach in the region by bringing in new clients and personalising solutions to local needs. The initiative I  put in place is making it easier for small and medium businesses to verify the true identity of their customers, improve security, and comply with regulations, with the aim of enhancing the adoption of digital verification solutions.

The Importance of Digital Identity Verification in West Africa

Each new day comes with another realisation that businesses need to make the switch to digital identity verification systems for more efficient operations. As more people use digital platforms, the need for digital identity verification increases, so having a safe method to verify identities is more crucial than ever as mobile technology and digital financial transactions have become the blueprint.

In addition to security and business, identity verification has implications for participation in society. Many Africans lack standard identifying documents like passports or national identity cards, which may limit their access to essential services, financial opportunities, and legal rights. This figure is 542 million, according to the UN Economic Commission of Africa (ECA).

MetaMap’s Entry Into Identity Verification

Companies in various sectors, including banking, fintech, and cryptocurrencies, have difficulty with customer verification, fraud, and compliance and Metamap is determined to proffer solutions. To effectively set up digital identity verification in a region where a large number of people lacked official means identification, MetaMap required a team that was familiar with the local environment and a solid plan of action.

This was when I stepped in. I was hired as a Business Development Manager to manage MetaMap’s expansion efforts, because of my extensive experience in product-led growth and revenue improvement. My experience at Interswitch, a leading payment provider, made me an excellent candidate. I have worked closely with fintech, ecommerce businesses and I understand the pain-point of digital businesses in Africa and what they require to grow. In this role at Metamap, I started by developing relationships, identifying key clients, and promoting MetaMap as the go-to solution for safe identity verification.

Also, I continue to lead the go-to-market plan for Kenya and Nigeria. I oversee a group of business development executives that are helping the company expand its operations in these spaces.  This in turn is contributing to MetaMap landing deals with prominent companies. The goal is to increase sales and change the way identity verification should be carried out in the area by customising MetaMap’s solutions to meet the demands of African focused companies to meet global standards.
