MERCY JOHN OTISI’S SHOWERS COLLECTION: EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN WITH EVERYDAY INTENT

By Odunayo Ayo Ojo

As creative director of SleyCrafts Fashion Ltd, Mercy John Otisi explores the intersection of experimental design and functional wear. Released in April 2022, Showers takes a restrained and refined approach, offering adaptable garments with a distinct design identity. By tapping into themes of enduring design and practical wear, this collection not only speaks to personal style but also addresses the broader, pressing conversations in the industry.

The collection’s red maxi dress makes a strong visual statement. Its gathered V-neck bodice, secured by a central drawstring, reshapes proportions and creates a subtle focal point at the bust. The gathering adds dimension, though its placement slightly affects the drape’s consistency. A geometric cut-out at the lower skirt provides a contemporary contrast to the fluid silhouette. The construction is clean, with sharp edges that reinforce the modern design, though additional structural reinforcement would improve durability. Consistent stitching throughout the bodice supports both wearability and finish.

In contrast, the two-piece sets feature an understated, modular design. Round-neck tops with extended shoulder seams create a relaxed structure that pairs well with straight-leg trousers. These pieces emphasize proportion, comfort, and repeated wear over visual drama. Seam allowances are consistent and neatly finished, and the cotton blend fabric allows for natural movement. This fabric choice not only enhances comfort but also ensures ease of movement, making the pieces suitable for extended, everyday wear.. While construction is solid, alternative seam techniques could further enhance durability for daily use.

From a product design perspective, Showers excels in versatility. The red maxi dress balances statement detail with functional construction, while the two-piece sets serve as refined wardrobe staples. Together, they demonstrate a clear understanding of how design choices translate to real-world use. The collection reflects a designer who is increasingly attentive to how garments move from concept to sustained wear.

For Otisi, whose background includes illustration, garment construction, and product design, Showers is a thoughtful portfolio entry. It highlights her ability to balance expressive design with commercial clarity. While some elements could be further refined, the collection demonstrates her evolving skill in merging artistry with practicality and her willingness to experiment while staying focused on wearability. This approach reflects a pattern that is becoming more visible across Otisi’s recent collections.
