Rotary Club of Ewu Tuntun Vaccinates Students against Cervical Cancer
Rotary Club of Ewu Tuntun District 9110 has vaccinated over 2000 female students of Ewu Tuntun Junior and Senior Secondary School, Mafoluku Oshodi, Lagos against cervical cancer.
The Club’s President 2021-2022, Rotarian Kelvin Ihekuna disclosed that “cervical cancer is one of the killers of females in Nigeria.”
Rotarian Kelvin Ihekuna revealed that “over 7,000 females died last year and more than 12,000 new cervical cancer cases recorded.”
He said, “The Rotary Club of Ewu Tuntun District 9110 cervical vaccination exercise is part of activities to mark the 2021World Cancer Day.”
Rotary International District 9110 Governor, Remi Bello representative, Assistant Governor Basirat Giwa, a medical practitioner, noted that “cervical cancer is preventable with HPV vaccination and early detection saves female victims lives.”
Dr. Giwa stated that “cervical cancer is third commonest type of cancer and second commonest, after breast cancer, afflicting women.”
She added that cervical cancer accounted for 9.7 percent of all malignancies in 2020 and recorded 12,075 new case in women and 7,968 deaths last year.
In her remarks, the Project Chairman, Rotarian Kudirat OlaOpoola, President-elect Rotary Club of Ewu Tuntun stated that “Rotary Intl District 9110, SUBEB Oshodi and Lagos State Ministry of Health collaborated to stem cervical cancer deaths among female students in public schools in Oshodi Local Government, especially those whose parents cannot afford out of pocket payment for HPV vaccination.”
