With a critical approach to storytelling, Oladayo adapts to different genres and styles, making him a sought-after director in the Nigerian filmmaking industry.
When asked about his motivation to pursue filmmaking, Oladayo said “My passion for creating has been ingrained in me since childhood. From a young age, I found joy in sketching and as I grew older, I ventured into photography during my time at university. A strong inclination towards visual arts has always guided me. However, the turning point that led me to pursue filmmaking was the overwhelming desire to express myself effectively. Being an introverted individual, filmmaking naturally became an accessible and expressive outlet for me. It provided a seamless means to convey my thoughts, emotions, and ideas.”
Reflecting on his journey, Oladayo spoke of a progressive path marked by steady growth. From creating social media content for small businesses to crafting corporate documentaries for prominent brands, he expanded his artistic horizons through music videos. Currently, his primary focus lies in directing commercials, where he ensures exceptional production value and uncompromised quality.
Oladayo’s creative process is deeply rooted in consumption and inspiration. He noted that by immersing himself in various content and studying filmmakers he admires, he synthesizes different influences to create innovative and captivating work.
Although he hasn’t received brand awards, Oladayo has garnered recognition for his exceptional talent and contributions to the industry. Notably, he delivered a speech on filmmaking at TedX Landmark University in 2021.
Recalling some absurd experiences and challenges in the industry, he stated “Currently, one of the significant hurdles I’m encountering is the hesitancy of brands to take storytelling risks in their commercials. Many brands prefer to play it safe and adhere to traditional methods of storytelling in their advertisements. I sincerely hope that more brands will embrace the opportunity to explore alternative perspectives and narratives in sharing their stories.”
Ibidunni Oladayo’s exceptional talent and dedication to his craft have solidified his position as one of the best directors in Nigeria. With each project, he continues to elevate the standards of storytelling and captivate audiences with his innovative approach.
