By Emmanuel Waziri Okoro

Around 2020, during the massive COVID-19 outbreak all over the globe which caused the world to go on a total lockdown. Some artistes and creatives were relentless and enthusiastic towards creating and producing beautiful music in the country, not only for themselves but to soothe their listeners in the midst of the pandemic ambiance. One of these dedicated artiste is Chinedum Ije.

Chinedum released a beautiful love song titled ‘Asanwa’ on August 15, 2020. Despite the pandemic outrage and the negative consequences surrounding the virus breakdown, he still found ways to portray his affection and love for his admirer with an ethereal sound.

The song title ‘Asanwa’ is an Igbo language which means ‘beautiful or pretty woman.

The song opens with the lyrics ‘she fine o, just like mami water. This line suggests his description of hiswoman’s beauty to that of mermaids which are mostly identified as elegant and beguiling creatures. In his Igbo native lingual, he talked about his urge to dance and jolly with his woman, and his aim to marry her, his beloved Asanwa. He got sensual in the song by saying ‘baby come closer, rock your body ontop my body’ which indicate his desires to have his lover to his side and possibly make love. He further sang about his preference of having twins after making love
with his woman and hopes to pay an homage to the father of his beloveth. A way of customarily asking for her hand in marriage. This, he said and sang in Igbo language.

The song chorus was also sang in Igbo which translates as ‘come and see beautiful girl, girl so pretty, come and see full thick girl. He further described the admirer as a neck breaker to depict
how men can’t resist the urge of turning their necks to take a glance at her body structure anytime she walks by. In the second verse, he pleads with his lover to relax her body ‘relax ya, relax ya body’ and tells her in Igbo, how her body is a cure for his own lust and how that same body is capable of devouring his money. He showed not only his unconditional love towards his lover but also his desire to make love and to spend extravagantly on her. He persists in regarding her as a beautiful and elegant woman throughout this song.

Undoubtedly, Chinedum Ije’s lyrics in the song ‘Asanwa’ was blended with a mixture of both Igbo language and the Pidgin English but the lyrics were majorly sang in Igbo. Even if his listeners does not understand his native language, the melodies and rhythms contained in the sound is enough to fascinate the listener’s heart and soul. The song as a whole embodies a message of love, fervid desires and hyperbolic lyrics. He preaches genuine love and several ways in which a woman should be loved. Apart from his lyrics and melodies, the song is a well-crafted Afrobeats sound with a beautiful production output. It is a song that indeed soothed the heart and the soul of lovers among the listeners during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Especially among lovers who the pandemic had shared into far distances. It is a sound that
connects two hearts physically and abstractly.
