The Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEHUR) voices its support for the ongoing National Assembly investigation into the mismanagement of $300 million allocated for combating malaria. CEDEHUR urges punitive measures against those responsible for the misuse of funds.

In a press statement signed on Sunday by the National Coordinator of CEDEHUR, Sunday Ogonu, highlighted concerns over the breach of agreements by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), which was tasked with procuring mosquito nets from local manufacturers. Instead, UNOPS attempted to import nets, jeopardize local industries and define contractual terms.

CEDEHUR emphasized the detrimental impact of malaria on Nigeria’s population, economy, and workforce, underscoring the urgency of addressing the issue promptly. The organization called for accountability from government officials and UNOPS representatives implicated in the misappropriation.

Additionally, CEDEHUR urged the withdrawal of the project from UNOPS and emphasized the importance of supporting local vendors selected through transparent bidding processes. By prioritizing local manufacturers, Nigeria can stimulate economic growth, create job opportunities, and utilize allocated funds for domestic development.

In conclusion, CEDEHUR called upon the Minister of Health to uphold contractual agreements and safeguard local industries from collapse. The organization emphasized the need for swift action to ensure the efficient procurement and distribution of mosquito nets to combat malaria effectively.
