“Breaking the Silence: Seyi Amao and Other PCOS Conquerors Members Illuminate the Path in ‘Where the Heck Is My Period’ Documentary”

Unmasking the Silent Struggle of PCOS

In a world where silence often cloaks the challenges faced by women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), entrepreneur Seyi Amao emerges as a beacon of empowerment. The riveting documentary, “Where the Heck Is My Period,” produced by the talented executive director Stephanie Coker Aderinokun, thrusts Seyi and her community, PCOS Conquerors, into the spotlight.

Why This Documentary Matters

Q: Seyi, congratulations on being featured in the documentary “Where the Heck Is My Period.” Can you tell us about your journey with PCOS and how it led to the creation of PCOS Conquerors?

Seyi Amao: Thank you! My journey with PCOS began in 2017 when I received an official diagnosis. However, the symptoms had haunted me since 2006. Misdiagnoses and unexplained menorrhagia (heavy bleeding) left me feeling isolated and quite frankly, depressed. I was also disheartened by the lack of resources and support available for women with this condition in Nigeria and across Africa.  In 2019, I decided to break the silence and raise awareness by sharing my personal experiences on social media. That’s when PCOS Conquerors was born—a safe haven for women to share experiences, find support, and access vital resources.

Q: What motivated you to participate in the documentary “Where the Heck is My Period,” and what impact do you hope it will have on society?

Seyi Amao: Participating in the documentary “Where the Heck is My Period” was a natural extension of my passion for raising awareness about PCOS and advocating for better healthcare for women. I also spoke to members of my community and about 5 other ladies were also passionate about sharing their stories. Some even flew into Lagos State, Nigeria to be a part of this project. Special thanks to Stephanie and the production team for making the necessary arrangements to ensure these ladies took part.

This documentary provided a platform to share the stories of individuals living with PCOS and shed light on the challenges they face. By sharing these narratives, the aim is to break the silence surrounding PCOS, challenge societal norms, and spark conversations about reproductive health issues. My hope is that this documentary will educate the public, inspire empathy and understanding, and ultimately drive positive change in how PCOS is perceived and treated in society.

Q: What is PCOS, and why is it essential to raise awareness about it?

Seyi Amao: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder affecting girls and women of reproductive age. It disrupts ovulation, leading to irregular periods, cysts on the ovaries, and various health complications. Apart from the popular side effect of Infertility, the long-term effects of PCOS can lead to Fatty Liver Disease, Diabetes, Heart Problems and Cancer if not managed. Raising awareness is crucial because PCOS affects approximately 1 in 10 women globally, yet it remains shrouded in silence and stigma. By educating society, we empower women to reclaim control over their health.

Q: What advice do you have for women who suspect they might have PCOS? How can they get diagnosed and take charge of their health?

Seyi Amao: If you suspect PCOS, seek medical advice promptly. Key symptoms include irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain, excessive hair growth, and hormonal acne. Early diagnosis is crucial. Once diagnosed, focus on lifestyle modifications, personalized meal plans, and supplements. Remember, you’re not alone—join communities like PCOS Conquerors for support.
