The Inspector-General of Police (IG), Kayode Egbetokun, said the Nigeria Police Force has concluded plans to establish a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) that would respond to communal clashes in the country.

Egbetokun made the disclosure during a courtesy call on the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, in Kano yesterday.

He said the current police management has decided to constitute a squad, the SIS, that would respond to communal crises in any state of the federation.

According to him, “Where there is a crisis or violent crime in Nigeria, the dedicated squad would easily be mobilised and deployed to tackle the situation.

“The importance of the squad cannot be overemphasised, as its success will depend on the cooperation and support the police get from the Kano State Government as well as other state governments.

He further explained that members of the squad would be specifically trained, remunerated, and equipped with modern gadgets in order to overcome the overwhelming security challenges in the country.

“The special squad will be specially trained, equipped and kitted properly, and we will remunerate them specially. They will be well motivated to do their job.

“We have chosen Kano State as one of the pilot states. But a lot will depend on the support we get from the governor.

“I honestly want you to take note of that and to take this as a request coming from the Nigerian Police to the governor,” the IG added.

While responding, the governor called on the police chief to support the state in the fight against drug abuse, armed robbery, phone snatching as well as thuggery.

He said: “We appreciate what you have been doing, and the tremendous efforts you have been making to end kidnapping, not only in Kano State but in Nigeria.”

The governor said his government has ensured that all the security agencies in the state are collaborating to face and deal decisively with security challenges in the country.
