A member representing Goronyo constituency in the Sokoto State  House of Assembly, Hon. Abdulwahab Yahaya, has challenged wealthy individuals to redouble efforts in providing financial assistance to the needy in the state.
Yahaya made the call at a one-day stakeholders’ workshop on Zakkat and Endowment Planning organised by the state Zakkat and Endowment Commission, in Sokoto at the weekend.

The legislator, who is also the Chairman House Committee on Religious Affairs,  said doing so  would really encourage public participation in assisting the needy in the state.
“Sokoto State Government is committed towards supporting  activities and programmes that would improve the welfare of the less privileged in the society.

“This is through huge  investment in the activities of the Zakkat Commission to achieve the desired goals,” he said.
He commended the members of staff of the Commission for ensuring the success of Zakkat and endowment in the state.
Yahya to this end,  called on wealthy persons to support government’s effort in that direction.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the commission, Malam Lawal Maidoki, said the aim of the workshop was to tap from the stakeholders experiences of the general principles of Zakkat and endowment management.
“This to identify our challenges in the area of planning and managing Zakkat and endowment in the state to ensure maximum utilisation of resources.

“Moreover, we are at the formation stage of the commission, as such we are trying to get in touch with all stakeholders that are familiar with the modern techniques,” Maidoki added.
Zakkat is a levy and a fraction of wealth  that is paid by well to do individuals on annual basis for onward disbursement to the needy in line with Islamic principles.
