Nigerian Military Directed to Fight Boko Haram without Infringing on Human Rights

By Michael Olugbode in Maiduguri

Troops fighting Boko Haram insurgents in the North-east have been instructed to take the battle to the terrorist group without violation of human rights.

Addressing the troops of the counter-insurgency operation in the North-east, the newly appointed Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Rogers Nicholas, said the military is a professional body and guided by rules of engagement and should not be seen to be engaged in illegality, including violation of human rights.

Nicholas, who paid assessment visits to military formations within and around Maiduguri, said the Nigerian troops need to be highly and morally professionals in the discharge of their responsibility of clearing the remnants of Boko Haram insurgents in the North-east, failure of which will draw criticism across the globe.

The theatre commander, who instructed the troops to remain committed and conduct themselves professionally and at all times fight to protect the integrity and corporate image of the Nigeria, appealed to the host communities to assist the military with information on movements of the insurgents.

He said: “We need the public to always pass useful and reliable intelligence to the military for prompt respond or action as the military cannot be everywhere at the same time.”
