Adedayo Adejobi writes on the inauguration of Rotarian Osi Imomoh as President Abuja Rotary Club and the impulse behind his resolve to making a difference
‘An evening like no other’ are just mere words to describe the experience of the day. It was the installation of Rotarian Osi Imomoh as the 8th President of Rotary Club of Abuja Metropolitan (The Club). The event was ushered in by a red carpet that commenced at 5p.m. on Wednesday evening of July 26th, 2017.
The August event was graced with dignitaries from all walks of life who believe in the vision and mission of Rotary Club International. Also in attendance were District 9125, Rotary Clubs representatives.
Incidentally the theme for this Rotary year is: ‘Rotary: Making a difference’. Perhaps, the passion to make a difference and contribute to a better world is why Rotary Club of Abuja Metro had adopted a village named Suaka back in 2013, a home to 1,500 Nigerians whose occupation is subsistence farming. Suaka is a village with little or no sign of modern civilisation and only accessible by an untarred and unmotorable road.
Seeking to impact on the daily life of the residents, the Rotary Club donated a borehole water system to the villagers to help them have access to clean and potable water. Before this the primary source of accessible water, which they also struggle to share with their animals in the village, is a seasonal stream, which dries up during the dry season.
Ever since Rotary Club’s adoption of the Suaka Village in 2013, some additional interventions have been made. These include immunisation of the children against Polio, distribution of treated mosquito nets and food items; the provision of primary basic education and roofing of the Learning Centres, to facilitate conducive learning for the children in the village.
Presenting Rotary Club’s objectives at his investiture, Rotarian Osi Imomoh said, his initiatives and projects for Suaka Village will include a Maternal and Child Health Care. “This star project is intended to deliver quality health care for the residents, since there is no health centre in the village and the nearest health centre is about 45 minutes journey on bike with the unmotorable and dusty untarred road from the village, these often results in loss of lives of pregnant women and children in cases of childbirth as well as death in cases of snakebite and other emergencies especially at night.
“Another project in view is the erection of a bigger borehole water system with overhead tank for the people of Suaka community as well as arrange vocational skills acquisition and training for widows and Suaka women.
“Additionally, the Rotary Club Abuja will work towards the provision of Legal Aid and Advocacy to inmates in police custody.â€
To this end, Rotarian Imomoh used his investiture to call for donors and partners to provide much needed support in these worthy projects at hand, to make life better for the people of Suaka community.
