Comptroller: Birth Registration Establishes Identity, Nationality for Children

By Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi

The Comptroller in charge of Bogoro Local Government Area in Bauchi State in the on-going birth registration in the state, Mr Paul Daniel, has stressed that registering a child’s birth is a vital first step towards establishing an official identity and nationality for the child.
He also explained that without birth registration, children are shut out of society activities as they are exposed to exploitation, violence and abuse.

The Bauchi State government had last week  in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), European Union (EU) Support and the National Population Commission (NPC) commenced a 10-day massive birth registration campaign across the 20 local government areas of the state.
Daniel, who was monitoring the exercise, addressed a gathering of parents in Mwari ward who brought their under-5 age children for birth registration, highlighting the various advantages derivable from the birth registration, emphasising that “a name and nationality is every child’s right”.
The exercise, which was monitored by THISDAY in Bar, Bogoro, Mwari, Boi, Gambar, Lusa and Badagari communities, among others, was hitch free as households in the local government gave maximum cooperation to the field workers.
