JAMB Registrar, Others Urge Muslim Men to Treat Wives as Equals

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is’haq Oloyede, has advised Muslim men to treat their wives as equals, and with respect, kindness and fairness.

The former Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, stated this while delivering this year’s National Ramadan Lecture of the Muslim Association of Nigeria (MAN) in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Oloyede, while speaking on the topic: ‘The Man in Woman: An Exploration of the Responsibility of Muslim Male in the Emancipation of Womanhood’, said one of the most valuable deeds a man could do is to treat his wife in a way that transforms him into a virtuous person.

The JAMB Registrar, while addressing the gathering, said this could be achieved when a man understands his wife’s behaviour and desires.

According to him, “Provide accommodation for your family, the same style as your own; not that your wife will be living in the boys’ quarters.

“The Holy Prophet Muhammad urged us to feed them as we also feed.”

Also, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, while speaking, commended religious groups for keeping the peace in the state.

Makinde, who was represented by his Special Assistant on Islamic Affairs, Alhaji AbdRasheed AbdAzeez, said the understanding and harmony existing among the groups had banished religious acrimony from the state.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, in his remarks, described the topic of the lecture as a vital one that could not have come at a more auspicious time.

He advised states interested in having Sharia Courts not to hesitate to approach the federal government.

On his own, MAN President, Professor Dhikru Adewale Yagboyaju, said the lecture was meant to serve the purposes of soul-winning as well as informing the public about current issues of importance in society, both of which he said are part of the core objectives of MAN.

The National Ramadan Lecture is one of the programmes of MAN. The annual event which is always held in the month of Ramadan enables knowledge sharing and discussion by members and the public on topical matters.

The association, founded in October 1959 by the likes of late Professor Aliu Babs-Fafunwa, late Justice Bola Babalakin, late Alhaji Idris Lediju and a host of others, has over the years been involved in activities primarily dedicated to the enhancement of members and societal advancement in general.

This year’s event was attended by the Timi of Ede, Oba Munirudeen Lawal; the Iba of Kishi, Oba Moshood Oyekola Lawal Arowoduye II; wife of former Governor Rashidi Ladoja of Oyo State, Chief Mutiat Ladoja; national officers and members of MAN as well as guests from across the country.
