As part of efforts to avert cholera outbreak in local communities, the Kano State Government has launched the treatment of 3000 open wells, with chlorine in the Bichi Local Government Area (BLGA) in the northern part of the state.
The Chairman of BLGA, Dr. Yusuf Mohammad-Sabo, who launched the program yesterday at Kwakwara well in Sabon Garin Bichi town in Kano, said that over two million people would benefit from the program.
Mohammad-Sabo said that the state government has decided to treat all the open wells in the area, with chlorine to get rid of waterborne diseases that might lead to outbreak of cholera, especially during the ongoing rainy season.
He said: “We got approval from the state government to embark on this exercise for one week in 11 Wards in Bichi local government area for a cost-effective method to prevent water diseases.
“The exercise became necessary, following the previous cases of waterborne diseases, such as diarrhea in 2022, so that this year it will be minimal.”
According to him, the exercise would help immensely in curtailing the spread of communicable diseases in society, especially those diseases that can be spread through drinking water.
He called on the people of the state to support the initiative by ensuring that their wells were treated with chlorine and enjoined them to help in curtailing the spread of communicable diseases in the society.
