The Students Union Government of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), yesterday absolved the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Abayomi Fashina of fraud allegations levelled against him by a students’ group.

The students, also, described reforms undertaken by the VC as a pragmatic approach to reposition the university, saying the recent allegations coming from critics were meant to distract the management and derail its focus.

The Senate President of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), Muhammad Lawal had asked for Fashina’s sack on account of alleged financial fraud and abuse of office.
But in a statement in Ado Ekiti yesterday by FUOYE SUG President, Johnson Alabi, the students said: “We want to say that our VC has been prudent, painstaking and followed due diligence and procedures in financial administration of our institution.

“The students’ welfare has been the number one priority since Fasina assumed office and FUOYE students have been able to enjoy a lot of benefits due to prudent management of our little resources, so the public should discountenance these baseless allegations.”

Besides, the institution’s Senate passed a vote of confidence in Fasina’s leadership, describing him as a thoroughbred academic and proven administrator, who was resolute to make FUOYE a highly competitive institution nationally and globally.

In a separate statement made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, by the Special Adviser on Media Matters to the VC, Wole Balogun, the Senate said Fasina had done wonderfully well in uplifting the academic standard of the university.

The statement said: “The VC has promoted over 20 academic staff, whose promotion had been delayed for years for various reasons most of which was political, to professorial cadre and full professorship, purchase of fully packaged tractor and other equipment to boost agricultural revolution in FUOYE.

“He has provided amenities such as electricity and pipe-borne water for departments which hitherto, had none, establishment of a printing press for FUOYE, livestock farming, establishment of FUOYE bakery and canteen, courtesy of the newly created FUOYE Ventures, establishment of FUOYE Institute of Part-Time Studies which is currently admitting qualified students and which is meant to boost the Internally Generated Revenue, (IGR) of the University.

“He provided a 50-seater shuttle bus for subsidized transport system for the staff from Ado-Ekiti on daily basis to Oye-Ekiti, approval of on-going projects for building of more hostels on the campuses, approval of SUG secretariat complex, approval of the take -off of FUOYE College of Medicine in October, 2021, establishment of training for entrepreneurial skills for FUOYE students so they could be both employable and self-reliant after graduation, and payment of some arrears of hazard allowance of staff members, among others.”
