The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) yesterday said that it had completed the restoration of power to the national grid after a nationwide system collapse on Wednesday.
A brief statement by the General Manager, Public Affairs of the government-controlled entity, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, noted that normalcy had returned after the incident.
“TCN restored bulk power to all the 330kV transmission stations across the entire grid by 5.54pm yesterday. The Kainji – Birnin Kebbi line however tripped on a fault but was restored.
“TCN’s 330kV substations feed 132kV substations, through which distribution companies off-take electricity they deliver to electricity consumers nationwide,” she stated last night.
The country’s electricity grid had suffered another system collapse on Wednesday, throwing Nigerians into darkness and leaving businesses to hook on to alternative electricity sources.
Nigeria’s erratic power grid, along with the resulting precarious energy supply, is said to be a key issue hindering growth in the continent’s largest economy.
Operators have said that a “spinning reserve”, the amount of unused capacity in online energy assets which can compensate for power shortages or frequency drops within a given period of time, holds the solution to the occasional collapses.
The company had said it was investigating the latest disruption, noting that it was working to resolve the problem and blamed voltage issues for the collapse.
