Ronaldo Grabs Winner as Morocco Becomes Second African Team Eliminated

For the second game running Cristiano Ronaldo was voted Budweiser Man of the Match after scoring the only goal in Portugal’s hard-fought 1-0 win against Morocco in Group B at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia on Wednesday.

Egypt became the first African team to crash out after the Pharaohs lost a second game to Russia 3-1 on Tuesday night after similarly been beaten 1-0 in her opening match against Uruguay. Morocco also lost her opening game to Iran 1-0.

Ronaldo claimed the award in Portugal’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Spain where he netted a hat-trick in their first group game last weekend.

The current FIFA World Player of the Year headed in a cross just four minutes into Wednesday’s game to give his side the vital win.

Aside from scoring the only goal, Ronaldo went close a couple of occasions to add to his tally and also tried to set up his teammates to get on the score sheet as well.

He is now on four goals at this year’s World Cup and is currently the top scorer so far.

Morocco played their part in an enthralling match, their vociferous fans cheering their side on for consistent waves of attack against the stern Portuguese defence.

Younes Belhanda came closest for the Atlas Lions, but his header was superbly kept out by Rui Patricio.

In the end, it was the decisive header from Ronaldo that claimed the win, his strike coming after just four minutes.

Portugal will come up against a familiar face in Carlos Queiroz in their final Group B fixture, while Morocco will have purely pride to play for when they face Spain.
