The time has come for the establishment of a federal commission for erosion control in order to effectively tackle the havoc being wrecked on communities prone to environmental degradation.
Special Adviser to Abia governor on Trade and Commerce, Hon Jude Udeachara made the call when he formally announced his ambition to vie for the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency come 2019.
He hosted members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Achara-Mbaugwu Ward 7 in his Amaokwe, Uturu country home, Isuikwuato local government where he outlined his plans for his constituency if he got the mandate to represent the people.
Udeachara assured that he was poised to give the people of Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency effective representation and tackle the problems facing them.
“We have major challenges in our federal constituency, apart from the basic infrastructure we lack in our constituency. We have a major challenge in environmental degradation,†he stated.
The governor’s aide said that if he realised his ambition of becoming a member of the House of Representatives he would pursue the creation of a commission for erosion in Nigeria, just like Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was created.
“We should have a federal commission for erosion control so that special budgets and allocations can be allocated to make for checking environmental devastation and erosion, otherwise, one day we will be in our homes and our houses will go under the earth. I will move for the creation of that commission,†he assured.
While urging the PDP stakeholders to give him support to secure the party’s ticket for the federal constituency seat, Udeachara said that aside from tackling erosion menace ravaging parts of the constituency, he would also bring electricity to those parts of his constituency presently without power.
The aspirant, who lamented the absence of asphalted roads in his constituency further promised to attract road projects and use his connections as a businessman to ensure rapid industrialisation of Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency.
“I will make it a point of duty that every year, we must have in our national and state budgets, road projects in our federal constituency,†he said, adding, “I will collaborate with multilateral companies for the development of our federal constituency through industrialisation.â€
The aspirant, who has been sponsoring youth football in Uturu for eight years running, expressed his readiness to establish a football academy that would produce footballers that would be exported abroad as professional players if he becomes a federal lawmaker.
