Senate President Bukola Saraki, during the May 27, Children’s Day celebration, paid an unscheduled visit to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Benue State, a move that has been commended by all who see more than the optics of the gesture.
Although Saraki remains one individual, who has consistently introduced a decent human angle to politics in this dispensation, drawing more attention to productive and effective retail politics, what he did on Children’s Day was a really good one, because it provided a great sense of belonging to the IDPs as a part of the social unit called Nigeria.
Without blowing this out of context, this is one of such gestures from a progressive mind that should be emulated often by other leaders at such times. For a people whose lives might have taken an ugly turn – hopeless and hapless – identifying with them at such a time is the biggest healer of their diseases. Thumbs up to the Senate President!
