The Foreshore School, Ikoyi recently held a Christmas concert to mark the end of the year. The programme featured among others orchestra, piano and violin performance, as well as music and drama presentation on the birth of Jesus by the pupils.

In her remarks, the Head Teacher, Ms Busola Aina said the concert was designed to inculcate in the pupils the joy of Christmas, saying that it can be enjoyed in its simplicity without doing anything out of the extraordinary.

“Christmas can be celebrated in your own way; it does not have to be so elaborate but can be enjoyed in its simplicity.”

Emphasising on the musical performance of the pupils, she said music is a compulsory subject in the school’s curriculum, adding that the skills they acquired was as a result of continuous training.

“When we were developing our curriculum, we thought of what will make our children stand out anywhere they find themselves aside just academics.”

The Director of the school, Mrs. Olubunmi Egbeyemi corroborated Aina, saying that it is about developing a total child that can multitask apart from just sitting in the classroom for academics.

She said by January 2018, the school would employ a Physical Education (PE) teacher that would coach the pupils on extra-curricular activities such as karate, swimming and volleyball, adding, “we also have an extra-curricular teacher for ballet. There is need to develop their skills so it is not just about sitting in the classroom, we want to have and develop a total child. Music for instance helps in developing their minds and extra-curricular activity is so key as this keeps the children busy.”

Egbeyemi also commented on the ongoing school expansion project, saying that when it celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this year, the management saw the need to be a member of the Association of International School Educators of Nigeria (AISEN) so that the school can take part in the association’s competitions and compete with other schools of the same standard.

The director added that the school is also working towards getting accreditation for Council of British International Schools (COBIS), saying, “the process is ongoing. We want to have a standard football field and swimming pool by January and we are hoping that the parents will support us.”
