The Institute of Directors in Nigeria (IoD) plans to introduce a new training initiative which will focus on certificate and diploma courses for both executive directors and non-executive directors of corporate organisations.
The initiative is part of the efforts of the institute led by the newly installed President, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed, to position IoD as a key driver of good corporate governance in the country.
Speaking at the investiture ceremony of the 15th President/Chairman of Governing Council, weekend, in Lagos, the newly installed president said the courses would be undertaken both online and physically in the classrooms.
He also noted that the aim of the courses would be to provide deeper and more entrenched knowledge about corporate administration and directorship to directors in leadership position and those aspiring.
Mohammed remarked that it would also serve well in the anticipation of the approval of the charter of the IoD which he noted is before the National Assembly.
Furthermore, the IoD president explained that there would a comprehensive directory with extensive syllabus on director capacity development which would last for up to three years or it would be developed and marketed.
This, he said would serve as the training module for the certificate and diploma programme to be run by the institute.
“Within the next two years, we shall make efforts to establish a permanent IoD training and research centre in Lagos which will compete favourably with the most reputable executive training centres in the country,†he noted.
According to him, there would be a staff audit to be conducted by an independent consultant to ensure that qualified persons are placed in the right positions, undertake an overhaul of the organisation structure and salary structure, fill established vacancies professionally and implement a continuous training programme for all staff.
Mohammed also pledged the commitment of the administration to assist budding entrepreneurs with governance skills, and establish a Young Directors Forum (YDF) with a view to providing necessary mentoring facilities for the YDF to teach them about governing their business.
