GOtv Ambassador, Daddy Showkey Rewards Outstanding School Children

The GOtv Ambassador and veteran singer, Daddy Showkey, has rewarded four students of Rybeka Model College, Ajegunle, Lagos for their outstanding academic performances during the 2016/2017 academic session at school’s graduation ceremony that held at the school’s premises, recently.

The beneficiaries, who were the best graduating student in senior secondary, junior secondary, primary and nursery sections of the school were given a GOtv decoder for emerging the best graduating student in their respective sections.

Daddy Showkey, who was born and brought up in Ajegunle, said he embarked on the initiative in line with his tradition of giving back to the neighborhood that made him what he is today. He advised the students to shun social vices and focus their minds on their education as well as relevant skills acquisition.

“I always advise people that there is nothing greater than making a child develop a skill. I could remember that in my time, I used to represent my school in debate competitions and those things have impacted me today,” he said.

Calling for the provision of vocational training in schools as a means of reducing the spate of unemployment in the country, Showkey said, “Vocational skills promote entrepreneurship. I am strongly advocating that government should improve the teaching and learning of vocational studies in schools. The reason most people today are waiting for government to provide jobs is because of lack of vocational training. Vocational schools will make our teeming youth population self-reliance.”

Speaking further, Showkey said that the presentation of the GOtv is to serve as a digital learning platform for students. According to him, GOtv can be used as an educative tool as it is loaded with various educational programmes and that it gives students real life experience of what they read in their textbooks.

“GOtv has many educative content like Nat Geo Wild, which complements teaching on natural sciences; documentaries, which help develop students’ critical thinking about society and the world; and cartoons, which help pupils in kindergarten learn quickly.
“Television can motivate kids to read more and explore the world around them. The key is to provide them with a guided viewing experience and GOtv is known for its top-quality content. It will benefit the students immensely,” he said.

In his remarks, the school’s Director of Studies, Charles Oyeka, said the management invited Daddy Showkey to inspire the students to explore their talent. “It is our goal to develop the child mentally, physically, emotionally and socially. Rybeka Model College places emphasis on arts and culture. It is not everyone that will be a lawyer, doctor or engineer. Daddy Showkey’s humble beginnings, life toils and success, which he shared with our students, show that any child, who is ambitious and backs it with action, will excel in life,” he said.
