The Member representing Dass constituency in Bauchi State, Hon Maryam Bagel has called for abolishment Amaljiri system) in the North-east, saying that the system contributed to the backwardness of the zone.
The lawmaker stated this yesterday during the celebration of the Day of the African Child (DAC), organised by the Bauchi State Television Authority (BATV) in collaboration with UNICEF at the BIC Plaza in Bauchi.
She said the essence of the Almajiri system of education was no longer relevant as it exposed young children who are suposed to future leaders to social vices like kidnapping, terrorism, robbery and homosexuality.
According to him, “So many stakeholders in the North-east are shying away from the negative implication of the Almajiri system due to political motives. When you look at system itself, it was suppose to make these young children become great, but how make of them actually become something in life”.
She also said “The Almajiri system of education has been bastardized because what initiated it in the first place was because there was inadequate knowledge of the Islamic religion, so young men who were interested in acquiring the knowledge were made to travel to places like Sokoto, Maiduguri to get the knowledge”.
“During that period the world was a safe place, but now almost in every neighborhood in our environment, we have these Isamic teachers and the essence of the system is now defeated”, She said.
