The Pro-Chancellor and chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Calabar, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has stated that the council was not aware of the suspension of the institution’s bursar.

In a telephone conference with a group of journalists in Calabar, Iwuanyanwu said the council has not been briefed officially of the lingering crisis between the university management led by the vice chancellor, Professor Zana Akpagu, and the bursar of the institution,Mr. Peter Agi.

“The council ‎has not sat on the matter, The VC is the person that suspended him (Bursar) and if the Registrar signed the letter as a council Secretary, the council has not met”.

The council chairman said the vice chancellor is the chief Executive of the University and there is something wrong in the University, he has the right to take whatever action he wants to take and report to the council.

“I have not received an official report, they will send me an official report on this matter and I have a council meeting in the next few days at the council meeting, we will now look at the whole issue and take a decision on whether to sustain the action or to revoke the action,”he said.

Commenting the decision of the management of the university to suspend the bursar, the chairman of council said:”Apparently he can exercise Powers as the Vice Chancellor as he called a management meeting and decided to suspend the Bursar. But the council has not met and . As I am talking to you now I have not received the report.

“As a Vice Chancellor he has the right to suspend people. If he has not sacked him,as a father of the University I will do my best to reconcile all the interest groups. I want them to have peace and work together.

He said the governing council of the university would meet on September 5, 2016.

The management suspended the institution’s bursar, on Monday through a letter signed by the Registrar of the University and Council Secretary, Mr. Moses O Abang.
