Kidnapped UNIPORT Lecturer Regains Freedom

A lecturer in the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Dr. Reginald Ohiri, who was abducted by gunmen on Monday was yesterday released by his abductors. Ohiri, who is a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry, was abducted on the eve of Monday from his residence in Aluuu community, Ikwerre Local government Area of the Rivers State. The gunmen who whisked Ohiri away at gunpoint, had after the kidnap demanded N2 million ransom for his release. THISDAY gathered that Ohiri returned home yesterday after he was released by his abductors when they realised he was not their actual target. The authorities of UNIPORT confirmed his release.

The spokesman of UNIPORT, Dr. Williams Wodi, stated the lecturer regained his freedom last night (Tuesday) and reported to school on wednesday. Wodi did not say if any ransom was paid before the release, but revealed that the kidnappers informed their victim that his abduction was a mistake in identity. “The man has been released, he left my office a few minutes ago. He was a victim of mistake in identity. That is what the man told when he came to my office,” Wodi said.
