At least 52 houses were destroyed by flood in Wurno town in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The Chairman of the council, Alhaji Abdulkadir Jelani, made this known to journalists in Sokoto yesterday.

Jelani said the flood victims were now being sheltered by neighbours and relatives in the area.

He stated that although there was no loss of any life, the flood had destroyed assorted farm produce worth millions of naira.

According to him, the farm produce including onions, garlic, rice, wheat and beans, among others, were destroyed following the submerging of hundreds of farmlands.

Jelani stated that the tragedy occurred sequel to a heavy down pour in the area three days ago.

He noted that the problem was aggravated by the blockage of some drainages in the town and its environs.

‘’This was also precipitated by the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and heaps of firewood in drainages in the area,” he said.

He therefore, appealed to the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to come to the aid of the victims.

Jelani said the local government had set up a 13-man committee to find out the remote and immediate causes of the disaster.

He added that the committee would assess the extent of damage caused by the flood and recommend the form of assistance to be rendered to the victims.
