The House of Representatives has called on the federal government to rename the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, after Lt. Gen. General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd).

The resolution of the House was sequel to the adoption of a motion jointly sponsored  by Hon. Jonathan  Gbefwi, Mark Useni and Ayuba Zaku Dampar at the plenary one Wednesday, saying the varsity should now be known as T. Y. Danjuma Federal University, Wukari (TYDFUW), subject to the necessary amendment of its enabling Act.

Moving the motion, Gbefwi said the University, Wukari was established in 2011 to expand access to higher education and promote research and national development.

He noted  that the contributions of Danjuma  to Nigeria through military and public service, philanthropy and support for education, healthcare, and vulnerable communities deserved such recognition.

Gbefwi argued that naming the university after Danjuma would honour his contributions to national development and preserve a legacy of service for future generations.

The Speaker, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, who presided over plenary, commended Gbefwi for sponsoring the motion, describing it as apt.

When the motion was put to a voice vote, the lawmakers overwhelmingly voted in its favour.

The motion was consequently referred to the House Committee on University Education for further action.
